Killiing the chill of a Seattle day

Crocheting has changed a lot since my grandmother made doilies — like the sample to the left — to cover the tops of chests of drawers and set on sofa armrests.

New York artist Xenobia Bailey has taken crocheting to a new level, as seen in this wall hanging on display at the Northwest African American Museum.

Closeups show gorgeous details of different sections of a piece, each of which would be welcome on my wall by itself.

What a perfect way to spend time on a day when the rain never stopped.

About stillalife

I retired June 30, 2010 after working for 40 years in the field of education and most recently doing school public relations/community outreach in a mid-size urban school district. I wrote for superintendents and school board members. Now I'm writing for me and I hope for you. In this blog, I offer my own views coupled with the latest research on how to preserve our physical and mental health as we age, delve into issues most of us over 50 can relate to like noticing wrinkles and forgetting where we left our keys, discuss the pros and cons of different ways to engage our minds and bodies after we leave the workplace, and throw in an occasional book review, all peppered with a touch of humor, irony, and just plain silliness. Also, I'm on the third draft of my second novel since retirement.

  1. my grandmother not only chrocheted, but tatted them…she called them doilies when on the breakfront, but antimacassars when placed on the overstuffed furniture. i took her “word” for it for 70 some years now, knowing i was happy that the fashion had not carried on to my generation…and probably her mother called them antimacassars and so on…from their irish/english heritage???? Well, if you look it up in the dictionary as i just did…you will be amazed. Grins…. L
